SBS will launch a dedicated 3D channel in The Netherlands before the end of the year, said Eric van Stade, MD of SBS Broadcasting. Speaking at the Het Nieuwe TV Kijken (The New TV) congress in Amsterdam, he added that the broadcaster wants to be part of new developments. “We do not know if 3D will be a success in the home, but we can’t afford to miss an opportunity.”

SBS will be working with a number of yet to be announced partners to establish the channel.

Van Stade also said the broadcaster is developing an iPad app with an EPG of its print publication Veronica Magazine, which will offer a personalised TV Guide. The device should also act as a remote control.

In a related development, Dutch industry players are planning to establish a 3D platform bringing together broadcasters, distribution partners, production companies and others.

“In a surprise confession, Ezatollah Zarghami, Head of state-run Iranian Broadcast Company, during a speech on Thursday to a group of war veterans, admitted that Iranian government indeed sends illegal satellite jamming signals against foreign broadcast satellites. Zarghami lamented: ‘Our own Alalam (Arabic broadcast by Iran) was removed from Nile Sat and Arab Sat in retaliation of our (own government’s) jamming signals targeting these satellites.’”

    Istanbul to become ‘telecom hub’

    By Chris Dziadul

T?rk Telekom plans to turn Istanbul into a ‘telecom hub’ following its recent acquisition of the leading alternative telco Invitel, which has a strong presence in Central and Eastern Europe.

Commenting on the purchase – last week T?rk Telekom agreed to pay €221 million for a 100% stake in Invitel – and quoted in H?rriyet, T?rk Telekom’s DG Paul Doany said that its purchase of an international fibre-optic backbone would turn Turkey into a significant centre in the region.

Invitel’s CEO Martin Lea added that it preferred T?rk Telekom as a purchaser as it had the necessary vision for growth and the resources for investment. In his view, it would become a strategic fibre-optic service provider that connects operators in the Middle East, Europe and North America.

Invitel, which has until now been owned by Mid Europa Partners, has a presence in 27 countries including Hungary, where it operates an IPTV service. It is T?rk Telekom’s first international acquisition.

Mediaset forks out €17.5m for 500-title Cecchi Gori film library

Italian commercial broadcaster Mediaset has acquired the former Cecchi Gori Group's film library for €17.5 million (US$21.7 million).

The library includes free-to-air and pay TV rights to over 500 feature films from Italian directors including Luigi Zampa, Luciano Salce, Ettore Scloa, Gianni Amelio, Marco Risi, paolo Virz?, Alessandro Benvenuti, Carlo Vanzina and others as well as Hollywood movies of the '80s and '90s not distributed by the majors.

Berlusconi-family controlled broadcaster and media group Mediaset acquired the library after it was put up for auction following the liquidation of Finmavi, the former company of media magnate Vittorio Cecchi Gori. He was arrested in June 2008 on charges relating to financial irregularities.

Mediaset said: "With this acquisition, Mediaset will make it possible for a substantial part of Italy's most important film heritage to become once again available to a mass audience."

Japan’s NHK to bring forward end of analogue satellite
    May 30th, 2010 - 7:53 UTC
    by Andy Sennitt.

Tokyo, May 30 Kyodo - Japanese public television network NHK has decided to cease analogue television services via broadcasting satellite at the end of March next year, about four months ahead of schedule, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday. By advancing the timetable and launching an intensive publicity campaign to notify viewers of the termination of analogue services, the public broadcaster hopes to allay misunderstanding among the public that only terrestrial analogue broadcasts are to be scrapped and that BS analogue broadcasts will continue, the sources said.

Japan is set to terminate analogue broadcasting - both in terrestrial and satellite services - and shift completely to the digital format on July 24 2011. Previously, NHK, officially called Japan Broadcasting Corp., intended to stop airing its terrestrial and satellite analogue programmes at the same time.

NHK is also set to consolidate its digital satellite services, currently offered on three channels - BS1, BS2 and BShi - into new BS1 and BS2 channels. At present, only BShi broadcasts in the high-definition format while BS1 and BS2 air programmes in standard video quality. The new digital satellite services will all be in the high-definition format, with the new BS1 channel featuring mostly news programmes and the new BS2 channel entertainment and cultural programmes.

NHK started satellite broadcasting services in analogue-only format in 1989. In 2000, digital services were added to its satellite operations. Some households in mountainous areas and on remote islands, which receive neither analogue terrestrial nor digital terrestrial signals, get NHK’s programmes via satellite analogue services. A tuner and antenna to receive satellite digital signals are required to view programmes sent via satellite.
